This new Pop Art painting of David Bowie draws on multiple sources for inspiration. From John Pasche's original lips design for the Rolling Stones to Tom Wesselman's seductive 60's Pop paintings of smokin' mouths.. The linear, minimal simplicity and flat colours a nod to the contemporary paintings of Gary Hume and Patrick Caulfield.

It uses cut up words and phrases from familiar songs to create an abstract text that evokes the essence of Bowie's oeuvre, and also adds potential for new imagery and interpretations in the readable words.

Bowie himself was a renowned smoker, and this is reflected in the warm, smokey blue-grey of the background colour. The words 'time takes..' that define the cigarette shape, also allude to a metaphorical idea that the cigarette motif is an analogy of life: i.e. we're 'alight' for an amount of time and then we're ash...

This is contrasted with the vibrant liveliness of the neon pink lips and the fluorescent green-yellow outline, with the nose defined by words from the song Jean Genie: "let yourself go.."
